I’ve been getting the question a lot recently: what is the difference between art therapy and therapeutic art coaching? There certainly is some overlap, like art and creativity, but therapeutic art coaching is different than art therapy in three important ways. Whereas art therapists focuses on diagnosing and treating mental illnesses, therapeutic art coaches focus on wellness, creativity, and life goals. Let’s talk about wellness in this post!
Wellness: A therapeutic art coach integrates creative expression with wellness coaching principles to help clients navigate emotional challenges, reduce stress, and foster personal growth. Rather than focusing strictly on clinical psychotherapy or mastering technical art skills, this approach uses the creative process itself as a vehicle for mindfulness, self-discovery, and holistic health.
Therapeutic art coaching can facilitate stress reduction and emotional regulation by guiding clients through meditative art-making techniques—such as repetitive patterns, watercolor washes, or intuitive sketching—to lower cortisol levels, quiet the nervous system, and provide a healthy outlet for pent-up emotions.
It can also encourage a mindful presence using tactile materials like chunky wool yarn, charcoal, or textured paper to anchor clients in the present moment, shifting focus away from anxious thoughts and into sensory awareness.
Therapeutic art coaching can unlock non-verbal processing, helping individuals express complex feelings, grief, or transitions that feel too difficult to articulate through traditional talk therapy alone, allowing subconscious insights to surface visually.
It also helps to build self-efficacy and confidence, supporting clients as they experiment, embrace “mistakes” in their artwork, and problem-solve creatively, which translates into greater resilience and adaptability in everyday life.
Finally, therapeutic art coaching helps to establish self-care routines, helping individuals design sustainable, low-pressure creative practices that serve as personal mental health rituals, fostering a long-term sense of accomplishment and calm.
